Traffic Management

In 2015 OPC asked for volunteers to form a Traffic Management Working Group. Its aim is to represent villagers on aspects of traffic flow around the parish and to formulate suggestions on how any issues could be addressed, putting these to Olveston Parish Council (OPC) and then South Gloucestershire Council for consideration and implementation. It reports directly to the full parish council and consists of members from each of the villages within the parish, and at least one member of the Parish Council.

In 2021/22 OPC purchased two Vehicle Activated Speed (VAS) sensors. These monitor and record traffic flow and speed throughout the parish. They are moved from place to place regularly, with the data collected used to help inform decisions on future traffic management. Current results from the VAS can be found below.

Community Speedwatch

Alongside managing the VAS sensors, part of the working group’s remit is to manage and administer the Community SpeedWatch initiative.

Olveston Parish Council Community Speedwatch

Community SpeedWatch is a scheme to help people reduce speeding traffic though their community. The scheme enables volunteers to work within their community to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding and to help control the problem locally.

Within Olveston Parish SpeedWatch is a collaboration between the Parish Council, Avon and Somerset Police and other local authorities.

Motorists who speed through residential neighbourhoods are very often unaware of the impact their actions have on local residents, or the danger they pose to other road users and pedestrians. Community SpeedWatch gives local people the ability to actively get involved in road safety.

A Community SpeedWatch can be set up in any village, small town, or urban area, governed by either a 20, 30 or 40 miles per hour speed limit. A SpeedWatch consists of local residents, who are willing to volunteer a small amount of time to monitor and record speeds with speed detection equipment.

Vehicles observed speeding will be sent a warning letter along with advice to help change their driving behaviour. Further action will be taken by the police against persistent and high end speed offenders as well as targeting individual locations.
